Howard Hughes was a genius designer of airplanes and a pioneer aviator. In 1934 his company begun designing a new type of airplane that was extremely aerodynamic for its time and could provide great thrust to its single engine. Contrary to the plane used by Lindberg, the single wing in the H-1 was placed on the bottom of the aircraft. In 1935, Howard Hughes tested the plane, achieving the world record in speed. His plane was the inspiration for various fighter aircraft, including the P-47 Thunderbolt and the Mitsubishi Zero.
